Working for Chanel for close to five years was a style Mecca for me of sorts. I went in as a style-conscious girl, and left as a well-rounded woman of style. Here are ten lessons I learned firsthand being a … Continue reading

Our popular boho bell sleeve mini lace dress has garnered quite a bit of attention, and as a result of tons of request this new off-the-shoulder boho lace dress was born.

We received so many emails from clients telling us how much they loved their dress, and so many request to make one for them with an off the shoulder option; you asked and we listened.

Being a small start-up fashion business, working out of a small studio, selling directly to our clients, we are able to truly listen and respond, and we feel privileged to do so.

This dress is versatile in that it can be worn either on or off-the-shoulder. The neckline is elasticized, and the details are beautifully sealed. Take notice of all the individual flowers hand sewn around the entire neckline. This extra step is time-consuming but truly beautiful. We pride ourselves on the small details.

Different from our original bell sleeve mini dress, there is a lining sewn in to the actual dress, where as the slip is separate in the original. The scallop sleeves and neckline, and flowing bell sleeves remains the same, as is the uncompromising attention to quality.

The dress is currently being offered in white, ivory, and in black. There will be three brightly colored additions in the next coming weeks, think bright green, red, and yellow…..a true paradise of colors.

Just to reiterate, because we are small as we are, we are able to add customization, such as change sleeve length, dress length, etc. If there is a particular color you are after, you only need ask, as the embroidered lace is 100% cotton and can be dyed.

White Lace Dress – It’s All in the Details

It is always exciting to introduce a new dress to the world, and equally exciting is the joy we feel in actually making the dress. This new dream-ers white lace short dress is the ideal example of the rewarding feeling that comes with making and shipping the final product. There is a true sense of pride which each piece made.

This exquisite dress is a detailed piece, in that we individually cut out flowers from the lace and apply each one by hand, and sew them on, again individually by hand for a seamless finish. These hand-finished flowers can be seen at the neckline, sleeves and hem, where the beauty of the scallop edges overwhelmingly stands out. This detail is so important in a piece, and it is what fuels the dream-ers line, and this cocktail lace dress heavily embodies our vision for the line. Whenever I see a well-sewn piece of garment, and brimming with details, I automatically assume that it is an ultra-lux expensive piece.

As a clothing designer lacking the formal training, I rely on my ‘eye’ and ‘vision’, and the first thing in a piece of clothing that draws me in is in the details. For me, it’s ALL about the detail. Spending a great deal of my working life at Chanel, it isn’t hard to see where the inspiration came from, although not entirely, it was a huge part of it. Personally, I did not want to create garments that just boast aesthetics, but ones that also spoke volumes with their details and workmanship. This particular white lace dress is as perfect on the inside as it is on the outside.

There are so many designers besides Chanel from which I have drawn inspiration. Many high-end designers automatically get the details right, and at the price point at which these pieces are sold, this isn’t an option, and rather it is expected. When you actually examine a designer piece loaded with details, one starts to appreciate how a designer has honed in on their vision, and the resulting beauty of how the seamstress constructing the garment has clung on to the designers’ vision. The meticulous laborious input really does justify the lofty price tag in most cases.

In gathering images to illustrate my point, I did not have to search for these such pieces, there were so many to pull from. Before I insert the pictures, I must mention that I am in no way comparing my pieces to these high-end designers. In fact, the dream-ers white lace dress retails at $315, while most of these designer pieces, I will be adding below are in the $15,000 – $30,000 range. With this fact, it is clear to see there is no comparison. I am simply highlighting the importance and sheer magnitude of details.

A Free Spirited Wedding and a Hippie Lace Dress

A couple weeks back when Mitzi sent me photos from her wedding I was speechless. The sheer beauty and perfection of everything blew me away and to think she planned it in just two weeks. Funny enough, I receive many frantic emails from many to-be-brides with weddings happening in under a month and they all seem to gravitate towards this bell sleeve hippie lace dress. Mitzi chose it in the true white and it is just perfect on her. Prior to her wedding she had emailed me and told me she received the dress and was in love with it. I remember her telling me that when she tried it on her mom cried. I might have felt a tear or two fall down my face when I read that, it was so beautiful I thought. I have a tender heart and so when I hear these type of stories, I tear up and get a bit mushy.

So, here are the photos to enjoy. Once I learned that Mitzi was an artistic and talented song-writer, I immediately understood why a traditional cookie-cutter would not match her style. Her wedding defines everything I adore about a bohemian styled wedding. It is simple yet stylish, it is fun and unique, and it has a free-spirited vibe to it. I am in love with her flowy freely done hair and how she highlights it with fresh blooms. This goes without saying, but I will add it anyways, I think her crochet lace dream-ers dress is luscious and oozes the 70s free-spirited hippie look adding culture and depth to her special day.

Did you notice her barefoot? This is a rad detail that I am in love with. I am so in love with it all. Special thank you to Mitzi for sharing the beauty of your big-day with us, and for choosing the dream-ers hippie styled lace dress.

Key Street Style Looks from Paris Fashion Week FW 2013

Spending hours perusing street style photos from Paris never gets dull for me; instead it is an instant pick-me-upper, far more potent than caffeine when I am having a lackluster day. The fall/winter 2013 shows brought out the usual flock of chic impeccably dressed fashionistas, as well as the uber trendy ‘of-the-moment’ set. Predictably favoring the under-the-radar style set, I vote for the chic amongst them. Ulyana Sergeenko, Elena Perminova, and Miroslava Duma, won my hearts with so many of their looks. Who can forget Elena’s show-stopping neutral toned gladiator sandal/boots, or Miroslava’s monochrome striped beige and black ensemble, and Ulyana’s ultra dramatic looks, my fave being the two-tone 50s style pouf dress? There were thousands of looks to peruse, how do you choose the looks you find key, without choosing at least a hundred photos? I have written here in the past about Emanuelle Alt’s predictable Parisian chic style, and she kept it consistent, this time, simply adding belts to ultra chunky winter coats. The looks were so simple, even a non fashion-editor can pull them off, yet they were impactful.

short-leopard-fur-coat-seen-at-street-style-paris-fashion-week

All the stylistas I mentioned above didn’t make it in to my key looks for this post, obviously, it wasn’t because I am not crazy in love with the looks, but the looks did not fall in to the framework of the three looks which got my blood flowing. Funny enough, I mention blood-flow, but then I am choosing three very simple and understated looks. I think every season I gravitate more towards the simpler looks, that literally anyone can successfully pull off, without worrying they will have to archive the pieces next season.

joan-smalls-in-leather-pant-and-jacket-monochramatic-outfit

The three looks being – monochromatic, leopard jackets and coats, and the ubiquitous all-black ensemble. I realize that the head-to-toe black falls under the monochromatic outfit category, but, I am cheating here, because I feel that this is the universal uniform of chic, whether its spring, summer, or fall. So, if you are reading this and suddenly became confused, you have all rights to be. Monochromatic and all black is indeed the same. It’s solely my personal preference, and a timeless look I feel always deserve its own spotlight.

woman-weaing-nude-long-winter-coat-with-nude-heels-monochromatic-outfit-streetstyle

Monochromatic simply means wearing the same color head-to-toe, or the same colored outfit. Many experts suggest mixing textures and tone when wearing monochromatic outfits, and while this is a great guide, I don’t think it is a steadfast rule. The monochromatic look is actually a key ‘trend’ for 2013, hence, so many street style photos from Paris; however, this is a look that while very mainstream now, is always ‘in-style’. It is a safe and ultra clean look. Personally I usually opt for neutrals, but as the photos illustrate colors looks great worn monochramatic also. A known benefit of wearing a monochromatic look is that it makes you not only look taller, but also leaner. At 6 feet tall, I could care less about looking taller, but leaner, now that’s a bonus. Check, check, check.

Some time ago I wrote a post on leopard prints, where I highlighted it’s staying power, so it was nice to see so many leopard print toppers being worn during the Paris fashion week. Anna Dello Russo’s sequined leopard jacket is chic and directional, and looks much like some vintage ones I have encountered in my past shopping trips for the online shop. St. Laurent designs Anna’s sequined leopard printed blazer, however, there are vintage ones around that is strikingly similar. Her Stella McCartney Leopard Print Coat is equally impressive, and one where a vintage faux leopard print fur coat will suffice.

White Summer Dresses to Wear Now

It is funny I titled this white summer dresses, because I don’t happen to believe that white dresses are solely meant for summer, but this is a search term that often send searchers to trendsettervintage.com, so I felt this was suitable for that purpose. I understand there are many antiquated rules about wearing white before memorial and after Labor Day, but I disagree with those rules, especially as I live in sunny Los Angeles. As spring is literally right around the corner, many will be frantically looking for their white summer dresses, and for good reason. The runways of Spring 2013 suggest that white will be a huge player this season, and it is an investment worth making.

Wearing white is quite streamlined, clean and refreshing, especially when worn in the form of a dress. Whenever I wear white, I instantly feel uplifted and very much as if in the ‘spotlight’ in a very effortless way. I think it is the crisp look of it that makes it so beautiful. It offers an alluring feel.

As you choose your white dress/dresses for the season, it is great to keep in mind that most rules floating around from yesteryears are pretty antiquated. I have heard rules such as ‘never wear black shoes with a white dress – only wear white or nude”, as some of the photos here will highlight – this rule no longer apply, that is, if it ever applied to you. There is however one rule, which I do follow, and maybe this too is irrelevant, but I adhere to it, and that is, not wearing white to a wedding. This remains a controversial topic in circles where it has been brought up, and I am always open for debate on the subject. I honestly feel that doing so really competes with the bride, unless the bride is non-traditional and chose an offbeat colored wedding dress. I would love to hear comments on this below.

Wearing a white dress is seriously amazing because it becomes a blank canvas that can be accessorized with hundreds of colors, etc. There are so many style directions that work with a white dress. White dresses works great for a fabulous daytime looks, or for a glamorous after dark look, think an evening on the terrace.

Currently in our online store, we just added our boho lace bell sleeve dress in a crisp white colored crochet lace. This would make for an amazing getaway dress. The dress does come with a skin colored liner; however, to heighten the versatility, this would look great for day over your swimsuit poolside, and then transitioned for evening worn with the slip.

As you see, wearing a white ‘summer’ dress is an easy and chic way to look incredible, and accessorizing it is limitless. This season you will be seeing this ‘white on white’ trend everywhere, but any piece you purchase will easily transition, as a white dress is always style savvy.

Which of these looks is your favorite? I would love to hear the rules you have heard or followed regarding wearing white dresses.

My Little Black Dress is Chic and Sexy

Black Lace is mysterious, sexy and chic, and my little black dress is no exception. Crafted from black lace, which would easily be described as crochet by many, our newest black lace dress is special. I love it because it is timeless. This dress shown in black is also available on the site in different color options.

The dress has a noticeable fullness, thanks to the separate petticoat that is included with the dress. Also gorgeous about this dress is the scallop hem detailing, it gives the dress a different dimension.

Unlike our earlier black lace maxi dress, this is a great above the knee mini length, and balanced by a high round neckline. It will be great for summer, although with a lil black dress, it is perfect and timely for year-round events.

I think it would be great worn as a wedding guest dress, and if the black isn’t suitable, it can be hand dyed in either our cheerful sun-glow yellow or magnificent cerulean blue shade.

In some photos we showed it with the double bow cotton sateen belt, and this is available in our online store, and can be purchased separately. I love the look of the all-black, but would also love an emerald green belt with heirloom style jeweled tone jewels. This is the beauty of the black dress, it is so versatile.

Below are a few black lace dresses that we loved the simple styling, and knockout finished look.

White Sundress – Flowy and Ruffled

The white sundress – Lately when rolling out new designs, I am always tempted to write and shout out drum roll…..so there it is , I always wanted to do this…silly, I know.

This new design is a step away from our beautiful crochet lace dresses, which has become synonymous with the dream-ers label. We are certainly not abandoning our lace, but wanted to have some spring fun with gauze, that is, cotton gauze to be precise. Cotton gauze is known for being lightweight, ethereal, and dreamy, and this new white sundress is all of the above.

white-gauze-dress

now available at trendsettervintage.com

Might I add, I pondered if this dress is classified as a sundress, I think it is, but I have seen some pretty casual beach cover-ups called sundresses, so I was hesitant in causing a confusion. On the basis of a sundress being a dress ideal for warm weather, with ultra lightweight/paper weight fabric, and a gorgeous flow to it, then this dress is an elegant sundress.

Inspired by my long companionship with vintage, this dress is reminiscent of the 1970s, with a noticeable bohemian flair. The ruffles though echo more of the glam era of the 80s. I love the way the 70s and 80s coexist so beautifully in this dress.

Although shown here in white, it is available in a multitude of colors. We are talking black, coral, off-white, red, and sand. All are gorgeous, and each will transition from day to night, in a flash. Because of the flowing maxi length, gracefully cut to the floor, and the breezy skirt, this dress has a ‘dressed-up’ feel, but it is perfect for sun-drenched parties or just for city strolls. Here in LA, our mostly sun-soaked days calls for breezy maxi dresses, but if you are not a LA inhabitant, not to worry, spring is right ahead.

white-sundress-for-wedding

The ruffles are my fave, they are so beautifully crafted and holds their shape so nicely, thanks to the added wire. There is nothing I hate more, (or maybe there is) than a wobbly, lifeless ruffle. Ruffles are meant to stand out; they tend to add a designer touch to garments. The ruffles on this dress also add a sculptural appeal. I am so in love with this!!! This is one of those dresses that I must own in every color, not just because it is a wear-forever design, but because it is head-to-toe amazing and I am obsessed with the plunge neckline. The maxi length is the perfect marriage to this seductive neckline. I believe in contrasts with dressing. I am old school; I would never wear a plunge neckline, with an ultra mini skirt. I have seen it worked on others, just not my personal preference.

ruffle-dress

hand-made ruffles add a sculptural feel

Going back to the dress, it uses 14 yards of 100% cotton gauze, and because gauze is sheer, we have double lined the dress, so you will not need a slip. There is a concealed zip fastening along the side. With its ultra full skirt, it is ready to make an effortlessly elegant impression.

This dress in all its plethora of colors, is now available on trendsettervintage.com, and retails for $195.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this white maxi dress.

The Short White Lace Dress – Unconventional Romantic

short-white-lace-dress-with-tulle-layers

available at www.trendsetter vintage.com

It feels strange actually writing, because it has literally been almost a month since I have written a blog post. Well, the time away was for good reason, we have been busy servicing clients, and producing beautiful dresses. We have 2 amazing new dresses to showcase here, but today we will highlight the short white lace dress, that have until now only resided in my imagination. This dress is truly special for many reasons, the first being that this is the first dress we have designed in true white. All our previous lace dresses were only done in ivory, ‘old-lace, black, blue, and yellow. At first we felt white was too traditional, but we also felt that because our dresses were all non-traditional/unconventional wedding choices, then it was perfectly fine offering them all in white. ALL of our lace dresses are now available in white, and we have sold many already in the white, so this was clearly a wise decision.

OK….so let me get to the topic of the day, the short white lace dress, that have me dreaming and thinking where can I wear it to. In the white color, it may be more suitable for a bride, on her wedding day, or as a reception, or rehearsal dinner dress. I jokingly told my husband, maybe we will be invited to an-all-white party and I could wear this. I haven’t been invited to one of those in years, so realistically I don’t see this happening soon. This dress is also offered in ivory and black. Now this in the black lace, I will have plenty of occasions to wear it to.

This dreamy and ethereal lace dress will drift your heart away, with its playful and whimsical feeling, and the unconventional white tulle overlay at the skirt. Rather than taking a layer of tulle and just layering a layer over the skirt, we decided to do something more complicated and unique, instead we placed it only over parts of the skirt. We tried to capture photos to show this detail. The sides of the skirt are tulle-less. Further, the tulle is gathered more in the front to continue the unconventional look we were aiming for. I’d say mission accomplished on this detail!

white-lace-dress-tulle-skirt-dreamy

vintage3008

vintage3010

vintage3005

The dress itself features a single inner layer of tulle to give it a gorgeous fullness, but this single layer still lacked the voluminous 50s princess look I dreamt of, so we added a petticoat to the dress. The petticoat itself is not attached to the dress, but comes with the dress. This is great because you can wear the dress with or without, depending on the look you are going for.

As in all of our lace dresses, the hem is scalloped, as is the neckline and sleeve. This detail emphasizes the gorgeous nature of this lace, and this lace is truly breathtaking. It is hard to capture in photos, but take my word for it, this lace is unlike any other lace you have seen, unless, of course, you have purchased a designer lace guipure dress.

I would love to hear what you think. Would you wear our new short white lace dress for your big day? Also, where else would you don this amazing crochet lace dress?

Tea Length Lace Dress – Newest Arrival

We here at trendsettervintage.com (my husband and I) are always overly excited with new product launches, and this tea length dress done in our magnificent imported cotton lace, has us thinking elegant weddings, bridal showers, and black tie gatherings. Brides looking for short wedding dresses will find this lace dress quite appealing.

This silhouette is a vintage inspired design with its ultra full skirt. It may be difficult to see the sumptuous fullness in the photos, but this has a world class fullness, that could rival any 1950s original circle dress. The dress you see here was originally done with only a single layer of tulle, but then we hastily photographed it, only to find that it just wasn’t full enough to make a killer vintage-inspired look. We then went back to the ‘drawing board’ literally, and added a full petticoat/crinoline inside the dress. The majority of the tulle on the petticoat is concentrated towards the bottom of the dress, to maintain a flattering fit through the hips. It is just amazing beyond words could capture.

You’ll notice that the skirt has multiple panels, as a single panel could not deliver this fullness that we were longing for. The front of the skirt features three panels, and the back has a whopping four panels. We did not skimp on the beautiful lace in making this dress. The bodice is also special, featuring a lovely slight sweetheart neckline, and has boning in multiple spots, to ensure that whoever wears this, will have a flattering and supportive fit all day and in to the night.

Need I mention the belt? It is as cute as a bow, literally. Fashioned from black satin, the face features two bows in varying sizes, and hooks at front. We feature the belt in black, but, it can be ordered in virtually any color you like, as satin is readily available in a rainbow of colors. For this, just shoot us an email to CustomerCare@trendsettervintage.com.

This stunning tea-length lace dress is shown here in the old lace shade. This color itself adds vintage appeal to this already vintage look dress. I have had to describe this color to many, and the best description which comes to mind is to think of tea dying. If one were to dye the lace using tea bags, the end result will be this ‘old-lace’ shade.

If this color isn’t your cup of tea, then, not to worry, it is also available in ivory, black, hand-dyed yellow, and cerulean-blue. It will be available in white in only a week from now. EXCITING, to say the least.

In ivory, white, and old-lace, this dress is a DREAM tea length wedding dress. However, as the color option changes to black, blue, and yellow, it easily transitions to an elegant black tie option.

Emmanuelle Alt – Fashion Advice for Tall Women

emmanuelle-alt-in-simple-black-pant-and-white-shirt
Standing at six feet tall, which is the equivalent of 183 centimeter, Emmanuelle Alt is towering over the fashion world, I state this with both literal and figurative intent. For most people with a strong tie to fashion, they would agree that being the fashion editor of French Vogue is not a title to be eschewed. It is also no secret that being a French woman and working in fashion, gives any woman a clear advantage of being perceived as credible concerning style. For this reason, I am hoping most would agree that being on top of the fashion food chain, and clearly French, most readers would agree that this woman is a fashion goddess. (Please note, I am not using the goddess here in the sense of the Grecian inspired associations that might come to mind, she is anything but…). Emmanuelle is more of the androgynous lanky woman, with an uncontested French personal style.
emmanuelle-alt-in-leopard-coat-styled-over-all-black

I chose her as the second feature for my tall women series, because she in my eyes, embodies style. If you are new to this blog, it’s great to point out that I have an ever growing anti-trend sentiment that is getting ready to explode. So, if you are someone who has to have what Kim Kardashian was photographed in, and you only want it styled that way, chances are you will not like Emmanuelle Alt’s style, or mine for that matter.
emmanuelle-alt-wearing-embellished-black-vest-with-gold

Emmanuelle style is best summed up as minimalist. It prompts the question, that how could a woman with the access to the all the best designers, merely take a minimalist approach to fashion? The reason may very well lie in the following quote.
quote-less-is-more

Her minimalist style is inspiring, and I love how she breaks the rules of fashion. As a self declared stylista who also happens to be 6 feet tall, like our subject, it is refreshing to see her being photographed in jeans and all pants for that matter, that barely passes her ankles. As a tall woman, it can be frustrating feeling like all your pants are “high-waters” or even “pedal-pushers” because the average pant was designed for the average height woman. In Emmanuelle’s case, I am sure her reason to do this is the identical reason many tall women does it. Clearly her key fashion position allows her access to designers with pant that will fit her with leg room to spare. I believe she does it, because it is her personal style, it works for her, and she loves it. Isn’t this what personal style is all about?
emmanuelle-alt-wearing-bell-bottoms-denim-jeans-styled-two-different-ways

Next, I further find it encouraging to see her photographed on three different days, wearing the same coat, but styled three different ways. After doing my first tall women post on Sarah Rutson, I am sure this is what real women of style does. They fill their wardrobe with quality, and timeless pieces that becomes the backbone of their closet, and rather than saying, “this was so last season,” they continue to reinvent the piece.
emmanuelle-alt-in-black-leather-cropped-pants-minimalist-style

As I have decidedly made this post a focus on tall women of style, I would like to highlight that she wears not only flats but also heels. This allows her to exude confidence, poise, and to be categorized as a style icon as she is to many women.
emmanuelle-alt-wearing-white-jeans-styled-with-slouch-fit-shirt

She wears minimal makeup, minimal jewelry, and generally takes on a more laid back approach. There are quite a few photos included for you to zoom in on her exceptional French minimalist style. What do you think of her style?
